Communications Class

A blog formed for the Communications department

  • 5 Things I learned In COMM 190

The number one thing I learned is that it doesn’t matter if professors are on the same level with eachother, sometimes, there is just that one person, who thinks he/she is more important than everyone else and interupts and tries bossing those on his/her level.

You can specialize in more than one thing, and even if your minor is not completely related to your major, it can still help down the road.

At Oxford, you don’t need to take GE’s and you only focus on your major field (as it should be)

Acting, is multifunctional and is useful anywhere

I also learned that some professors are capable of having a sense of humor and that some do actually care about me

  • 3 Places to work for

The Silver Stag is an all american company that produces many knives, daggers and swords. None of their goods used to make their items are outsourced and all their labor is in America. Many of their goods are popular among the hunting and fishing communities. They have been rated top quality by magazines and organizations such knives are; Whitetails Unlimited Knife of the Year, Ducks Unlimited Knife of the Year, Mule Deer Federation Knife of the Year, NRA Knife of the Year, Quality Deer Management Knife of the Year, Cabela’s 50th Anniversary commencement knife, NRA Limited Edition Damascus Piece, and the 2012 National Wild Turkey Knife of the Year

Since they are a company that does not mass produce all of their orders are custom made. Which means there is no single item to advertise, which makes advertising a challenge, but a necessity, and that is wher eI would most likely come in. I would, however like to work the forge myself and learn bladesmithing

They don’t seem greedy either, they use top quality steel for all their items, and have very good competative prices. This ensures that they will stay in business and creates job security. But it also shows that they are not in this just for the money, it is their trade and passion that rewards them more than the coin, and that speaks volumes for the morality of the company.

The CDC would be an interesting place to work for as well. Most likely dealing in public relations. The topics will never be dull and it’s a government job that pays well. What also is nice is that the CDC is a government branch that can not be cut in funding because it is a necessity for our nations health and survival.

The CDC is always alerted when SWAT or police find out about a terrorist with a dirty bomb or in the event of BIO-warefare. They are the experts who know and research how to properly contain viruses, bacteria and anything else that is harmful to human health and nature in general.

The public relations for this department would be interesting, however, I think I would prefer personel management here because it would be interesting to learn how to train the office workers. While doing such, I can learn a wide variety of things about diseases and such while working there so work will never be boring either.

Bethesda Studios was established in 1986 in Bethesda, Maryland. They have made many games since then and were the first to make a game based on the laws of physics, which changed the gaming reality indefinately. One of their most notable game series has been the Elderscrolls, with the recent release of “Skyrim” on November 11th, 2011.

They’ve been around for a long time, and with their recent hits, they aren’t going anywhere for an even longer amount of time, so job security in that area is covered. I have watched a lot of their behind the scenes and life as an editer and game designer and that work fascinates me. It would be nice to be a personel manager for that company organizing the artists with different ideas, training them in the workplace and just plain being their, would be a great experience.

The pay for any videogame company personel is very good, which is why every new release is 60 plus dollars per game. Just a piece of shiney plastic with a bunch of 0’s and 1’s costs so much. This is definately the wave of the future, and has been. Definately where the money is.

  • My Five Most Favorite Possessions Are;

There are many physical things in this world that I covet. There is also nothing in this world I don’t cherish. And the things I treasure most in life, can never be taken away by any man or God. I was glad to see this document worded as “possessions” and not “items” because items limits you to only physical things, while a possession is something you own that could be physical or metaphysical, with which my list entails both. (pics of web, car, and quote provided by Google search engine, I do not take ownership of those pictures)

    1) My first favorite possession is my right to believe and think and say and express whatever I wish peacefully without prosecution. This is a very dear thing to own, because even if the government changes to allow you to be prosecuted, they can never force you to think otherwise, because you have free will. This is the very foundation of a community based on communication.

    2) My ability to express, and connect with other people easily. This is a possession that is worth living for- without this ability how would one develop a sense of identity, or a sense of belonging? Without the abilities to interact with each other, the mind would be a frail and schizophrenic quagmire of dysfunction.

(The picture below, is a small scale version of a connected web-weaving ceremony. Each participant has a spool of wool or string, and they intertwine it with others to make a huge web, symbolizing the connectedness of everyone in that community. It is a beautiful ceremony and the web can go up to 50 feet in diameter)

Now onto the physical objects that I covet.

    3) My car and phone, both are grouped together because they fall under the same category that is needed to fulfil a successful life. I need to be able to travel to work, and I need the ability to call for help if my car breaks down.

    4) My Religious items; Pendulum, Tarot cards, Ankh et cetera. I grouped these together because one without the other, is almost completely useless. It would be like having a sextant, with no watch or map in the middle of a forest.

    5) My duster. Yes a simple long coat when glanced at in passing. But the coat was given to me for my graduation of high school, a milestone in my life. It bears my insignia on the back, that was custom designed by me as a crest.
